In our Social Studies lessons we have been learning about the many causes of the American Revolution. One of the main reasons were taxes. On March 22, 1765 the British passed the Sugar Act on the colonists that required them to pay taxes on items such as molasses, blue indigo dye, and pimentos. This, amongst many other taxes, angered the colonists and started the revolt. The tax was eventually dropped, but it may be making a return...
In a recent study, researchers have found that sugar has just as negative affects on the body as tobacco and alchohol. It has, therefore, been suggested that sugary foods start becoming taxed at a higher rate, just as tobacco and alcohol are, in order to try to discourage people from eating those foods. I am not against the sugar tax because I believe that the government is wanting us to stay healthy. If we eat a lot of sugar we'll get heart attack. The government made the soda can 10-12 United States cents. We can use honey instead of sugar to make it sweeter. It is o k to use sugar but not so much because it will cause diabetes. So I think the government should give a sugar tax. odai#
I am neutral because I think that the government shouldn't tax sugar because people are free to eat whatever they won't. If that means they will be obese then so be it is there choice. I also believe that the only reason they are taxing all of these things is because the government is broke because they get involved in wars they don't need to be in which waste money and causes depression to families in the u.s. I also agree with them in a way because all of this sugar causes diabetes heart disease and some types of cancer. Also because 35 million people die each year from all of these disease.These are the reasons I am a neutral.

Should sugar be taxed? Just because it can have the effects of drugs, cigarretes, and alchohol? I think not. The Sugar Tax Debate is a big issue for me. It seems that because sugar can have the effects of drugs, alchohol or cigarrettes, then it should cost more, as the drugs do, too. But for me, it seems that this would be the Revolutionary War all over again! When King George III taxed the colonists on their sugar and stamps, and eventually tea, then they got mad, which to me, I would get mad too. And if this tax does get passed, then the phrase "History repeats itself," would be true, for sure. And I also think that everybody has their freedoms. Passing this tax, may take away some of these freedoms. Why can't they just let everybody control themselves? The Government already pretty much CONTROLS US!!! So this would be just ANOTHER way to get our valuable little pennies into their waiting hands. So pretty much it would be a way for them to get money. Now I know that Michelle Obama did take up the cause of child obesity, and I do believe that this is a big problem, but I also believe that using money to dissuade people from buying items, is bad. The problem is bad already, and now we're getting money into this problem. Now a lot of us agree with this, including me, which is money is the cause of all evil. And I like sugar, but I don't eat it as often as some people do, so its like punishing somebody who didn't do anything wrong! So join our cause, and fight against the sugar tax!!!!!

I am for the Sugar Act because as you probably know in America we have a problem with childhood obesity and obesity in adults. So if they say sugar has just as negitive affects on the body as achol and tobacco does I don't think kids should be eating alot of sugar. We have a handful f people who constantly dring, and we have a whole lot of people who smoke tobacco, So why should we pass that down to children? So if we do proceed with the Sugar Act, they will raise the tax of things that have alot of sugar in them, but if you are really adicted to sugary foods and candy you are going to keep buying them no matter how high the price gets, and all of the money you spend will go to the goverment. I think this may make a change in America, at least a little bit. But who knows, people might say, "I don't care if the price goes up I am still going to buy my candy." If this is the case America will not change. This is why I am for the Sugar Act.

I dont think the government should tax sugar.I dont think they should tax sugar because I think it is none of their buisness.Also I dont think they should because I think we should eat want we want and eat it without other peoples openion being said.If I want to drink a soft drink im going to drink a soft drink and I dont care what anyone thinks.I think we should be able to eat and drink what we want without the governments nose in it.I know people dont care whats in thier food and if they dont care I dont think the govenment should care for them.
Sugar is in practically everything in these modern days so I don't think that "everything" should be taxed.Since America is free, then I think that we should be able to eat however much sugar we want. If you ask a adult about the situation then they're probably going to say sugar tax is fine,but if you ask a kid then they're going to say the adults are crazy.But I think that we should have the freedom of eating whatever we want to. Thats what caused lots of wars, don't let our world go into WW3!!!Thankyou.

I dont think the goverment should tax sugar because its in most of the foods we eat. Sugar keeps us up and active though too much makes you bounce off the walls. Sugar is what we see when we look on the sides of cereal boxes for nutrition facts so we can make sure we have the right amount. Sugar is in alot of foods like cereal the dinners we eat and so on. Thats why I dont think they should tax sugar. We need it sugar is one of the most important things in America.
I don't want the government to tax surgar because people will stop buying candy on holidays like Halloween because it's taxed more. But I also agree with them a little because it could put holes in your teeth and will cost a lot of money which is not cool. If we were back in the 60's then it wouldn't matter if they taxed surgar because it will only be like 40 cents. But if you eat to much surgar who knows what will happen. I think the gov. is just trying to stay healthy. I also think that the gov. is playing mind games with us they're trying to make people stop buying surgary foods for a while. Yes they sould have sugar tax because meany people get sick when they eat to much sugar.A soda will go up 10-12 cents.Consuption of sugar thipled in the last 50 years.I also think it's a bad idea because people chouse what they eat.Meany people get sick becase of what they eat.Wach what you eat. I am against the sugar tax because we should be healthy and active.If we dont then were going to have to much calories.people should go to the gym to work out or should be at the park to run or walk.children should be playing outside with thier friends instead of being inside eating candy.And parents are wasting mony on candy insdead of bannannas,apples,oranges or pineapples.My parents dont buy candy because they say that its not healthy but they olny buy it on mondays so we can have a little treat.lesly12
I am against the sugar tax.I say this because my family drinks a lot of soda.Especialy my mom.And if we get a sugar tax, we're just finding the government more money because we're in so much debt.Besides, they just get us involved in wars that we don't need or want to be in.So I think sugar shouldn't be taxed.

If I had to vote for the sugar tax or not i would have to vote no. I know it is unhealthy but I eat so many things with sugar, soda candy and a lot more stuff, I'd have to pay like 5 extra bucks a week. i'm sure other people would agree with me but if they do tax sugar I will be thanking them when I get older. And if they do tax it, lets say 3 cents a grahm I would pay another 2 dollers. I eat so much sugar because I usually am doing sports around dinner time witch is like three days a week. I go to Qick Trip to get something, and sometimes we carpool. So we have to get our friends something becaus if we don't it would be rude. So really we get like 3 sodas for everyone and evry one gets a snack, that would probably cos about 14 dollers times 3 because three days a week would be about 42 extra dollars. I do not think that they should tax sugar at all.
Yes, I am for the sugar tax because it can help the next generation of kids to cut back on their sugar intake. If kids cut back on their sugar, this will help to eliminate many diseases in children which might carry over into adults. Obesity, heart disease, diabetes (Type II), and cancer have all be tied to sugar consumption. If sugar costs more, then people might have to think twice about buying it. People might pick to have a banana instead of a candy bar. Things that aren't good for you and make you sick should cost more money so you can't buy as much. The government should get the money so they can pay for people's medical bills who choose to still keep their sugar habit. All of these reasons are why I support the sugar tax. Elizabeth #7
when Mrs.Scanlon broght up sugar tax I had mixed felings.At first I thought thats not fair.Mostly beacouse we should have the right to eat what ever we want whith no extra cost.But on the other hand I think It would also help keep people in shape.It would just be less of a teptation to buy the unhealthy foods.So I would not mind suger tax. I am not against it because its not healthy for people and if you eat to much candy you could have a cavedy.And if you eat a little bit of candy and you brush your teeth day and night you are healthy.And what im thinkin right now is dont eat chacolate it always gets stuck on your teeth.And thats why i choose to not have sugar tax.The end.
I think that the sugar tax will not be a good idea because that the people that live in the U.S will get really mad. They will get mad and hurt someone because they get very mad and that is why they sould not rase the prise of sugery food. I think it's not right to put taxes on sugar because the Goverment is trying take our money for no reson.We have to pesaude the kids to not eat much sugar instead of raising tax on sugar. Sugar may be bad for you, but we have we be active and we can be example of being healthy. I

Auggie...I think the sugar tax is a bad idea. In the constitution it says we are free. Sugar in my eyes is not that bad. People should be able to choose what they eat. Sugar may be bad for you, but not as bad as other things can be. I want to fight for it. I don't want America to be like Brittain 230 years ago. America is FFRREEEE to do whatever we want. Kids might be fat but it's their decision. Thats why I yhink the sugar tax is the absolutily worst tax (Idea) ever.
Sugar tax is not fair. People are trying to control what you eat by carging more money. This is a free country. people should not control what you eat. You need sugar to cook. Honey has sugar. Thats why sugar tax is bad.
